WOKE
WOKE
It amazes me how this one word can evoke so much anger and divisiveness. If you look up the word, there are several meanings. Wikipedia says within the 2010s, the word woke (the colloquial, passively voiced past participle of wake) obtained meaning 'politically and socially aware' among BLM activists.
It is also listed as a past tense verb - emerge or cause emerge from a state of sleep. To stir or come to life.
The origin is listed as Old English (recorded only in the past tense woc), also partly from the weak verb wacian 'remain awake, hold a vigil'.
I am about to go "third person" on you. Does Jackie Armstrong think that she is woke? Sure do. Does she see anything wrong with the reference, she sure doesn't. I am not a label person, I never have been, but our society has gotten so hung up on labels and separation.
For me this word is awareness. I want to emerge from a state of sleep when it comes to real-life issues such as racial injustice, human rights, women's rights, political agendas, all the things that matter to me in this life. I want to stay "woke" as I care for people and what happens to them. I am 'woke" in my observations of our current political climate as I witness people in power use their power to take freedoms away from those who have worked so hard to obtain them. I once heard the statement, you stand for nothing, you fall for anything. Someone notable had to have said that because that is such a powerful statement and has always resonated with me.
Most of all, I am human. I want us all to win and succeed. I want us to look at one another and not see our political affiliation but a common agenda for peace and prosperity for all of us, no matter our color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc...
Be BOLD!! I am going to stay over here and remain, WOKE!
