If you have been in my life at all you know that I am a dog person. I am writing about all of our fur babies and my current baby boy because he has a Vet. appointment today so I had to write this blog yesterday and publish it today. For some odd reason, Sean doesn't want to get Koby fixed. We have always had our dogs neutered, no question. The Vet. did tell us when he was a puppy that it is now recommended that you wait a year before you do it. Koby was a year old in September. Today's visit is for shots and we will be discussing getting him neutered, again.
We have always been a dog family. Sean and I both had dogs growing up. A couple years after we were married Sean went to Massachusetts to visit his grandmother and came back with a Lab mix puppy. Sean's grandmother had a sixth sense about dogs and picked him out for us. We named him Deoge. How do you spell dog? D-O-G! We changed the spelling to Deoge because it got confusing for the Vet. That dog was the smartest dog we have ever seen. He picked up commands so quickly and was just a smart boy. He was with us for 13 years. Saying goodbye to him was one of the hardest things we ever had to do.
While he was alive for a bit we also had Lilly. She was our purebred AKC-registered Chocolate Lab. She had all of her paperwork and was beautiful. She lived with an older couple who could not take care of her any longer because the man of the house was dying of cancer. She was wild and had a mind of her own. She was kept outside a lot and had no training. I remember our son was about five or so when we went to visit her and she ran over to him, knocked him down, and scratched his eye. He cried and kept saying, I don't want that dog! I was in agreement so we got in the car to leave and she sat behind the car not allowing us to leave. We finally left and got a few miles down the road and Sean convinced us that he could train her and that she would be a good girl with a little love and attention. She remained Sean's girl up until the day she died. She was a stubborn girl with a mind of her own. She never met a stranger she didn't like. We had to put her down a little over a year ago.
Next up was Boomer, Boom-Boom! He was a yellow Lab and so handsome! A teammate on Jacob's basketball team had an uncle who had yellow Lab puppies for sale. We wanted Lilly to have someone to play with so we ended up getting him at six weeks old. That boy was a sweetheart and he was pretty smart as well. Not Deoge smart but pretty close. He had the sweetest disposition. Jacob was about 10 when we got Boomer and he called him his brother. This past August we thought Boomer injured his foot so we took him to the Vet. It turned out that Boomer had an aggressive bone cancer and we had to put him down. That shook us to our core. We were not ready to say goodbye to him. He was almost 10 years old. Even on the day we took him to be laid to rest he was so happy and loving. It breaks my heart to think about it. He was simply amazing! His favorite things to do was to swim, chase balls and hang out with his brother, Jacob, and his friends. He had to be everywhere they were. He thought he was one of the boys! He was. See my handsome boy below.
Last but certainly not least, is Koby! Koby is a blue Pit Bull and is truly one of a kind. We have always been a Lab family but I fell in love with my nephew's Pit and knew I wanted one someday. After Lilly passed we decided we would get Boom a dog and Boom probably thought, I could do without this kid. Boomer was so sweet with Koby and all of his energy. He played with him up until he died. Koby loved Boomer! He tried to nurse off of him for a long time until one day he figured out there was no milk coming out of his boy part. HA! Koby missed Boomer and looked for him for weeks after he was gone. We were all a mess when Boomer left us. Koby is now 17 months old and when I say he has a personality, this dog has a personality! He sits up like a human, will stare you dead in your eyes, and will not look away until you do, gives you zero personal space, and acts like he is the king of the hill. Never mind the judgy looks he is always throwing our way on a daily basis! We love this boy so much. I am so thankful we had him when Boomer passed, I definitely think it gave us a focus and helped us grieve a little easier. We love our fur babies. They all have been family to us, our kids. It is so hard to say goodbye but I wouldn't trade the years I had with all of them for anything! They made life sweeter, that's for sure!
